After a period of having no band in the town, members of previous bands came together to form a new Aberbrothock band in 1972. The band under the leadership of Pipe Major Tom Dear, undertook fundraising and along with support from Arbroath Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland, purchased uniforms and instruments. The affiliation with the Arbroath Branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland was highlighted with Legion cap badges being worn by all the members. Clarifying the connection with ‘the Legion’ was made more prominent when the band changed their name in 1974 to Arbroath Royal British Legion Scotland Pipe Band. The steady flow of new members to the pipe corps came through a teaching class held in Arbroath High School. Tuition of pipes was given by Tom Dear, Dave McKenzie and John McDougall. The band continued to grow under Tom’s leadership until he retired from the position in 1976 when George Rogers took over the Pipe Majors position. George had previously lead the Dundee NCR band and introduced the band to the competition scene. Leading Drummer Jim King along with Ian Berrie teaching drumming provided a strong drum corps and a steady flow of new drummers coming through the ranks Work commitments proved problematic for George and the reins of the band were handed over to Pipe Major Willie Dickson. Willie had a wealth of knowledge and experience in the pipe band world. Having previously been Pipe Major of Mackenzie Caledonian Band in Dundee, Willie continued to take the band forward in competitions with a highly successful year in 1977 taking the band up from Grade 4 to Grade 3 level. As well as competing the band continued to represent the Arbroath Branch at British Legion events throughout Scotland. Due to ill-health, Willie Dickson passed on the Pipe Majorship to Willie Christie in 1986. Willie had been a band member for many years and retirement from the Merchant Navy allowed him more time to dedicate to the band. A new teaching class was established with Morag McKenzie and Colin McDonald offering lessons in piping. After the sudden death of Willie Christie, the Pipe Majors post was taken over by Colin McDonald in 1996 In recent years the band competes on a regular basis. The serious competing began in 1998 under the leadership of Pipe Major Ryan Kennedy. Success came when the Novice Juvenile band was upgraded to Juvenile grade in 1999, which was an excellent achievement following one season of competition. Further success in 2001 came following the amalgamation of the Juvenile and Grade 4b band. The band was crowned Champions of Champions for both piping and drumming in Grade 4b, the band was also crowned Scottish Champions at Dumbarton. 2002 the band competed in Grade 4a following the upgrade in 2001. The band won various prizes through the year including 2nd place at the Scottish, British and Cowal. These results helped the band, finishing overall 3rd and therefore being promoted for the 2nd year running. 2003 saw the band saw the band starting a fresh challenge by having to play MSR or a Medley set at each of the majors. The band finished 6th overall at the end of the season. In 2004 and 2005 the band continued to compete in Grade 3b with some success. At end of 2005 the band had requested to play in Grade 4a due to a variety of reasons. The band therefore continues to compete in Grade 4a to the present day. The band is currently under the leadership of Pipe Major Ryan Kennedy |
